Pittville Park Masterplan

Key:   Fence      Features to be removed

HISTORIC LANDSCAPE Including Lawns, Squares & Crescent

Managment & maintenance programme for renovation, replacement & removal of incongruous vegetation & surface materials to enhance historic character & setting. eg Replace concrete slabs lakeside edging with natural stone. See Landscape Conservation Management Plan.
Remove mature trees around upper lake to restore historic vista between Pump Room & south shore. Re-locate floating reed bed out of this vista.
Consider long term future for Scout Hut which is unattractive & blocks north-south vista between lawns. Re-instate lawns to building footprint.
Enhance the setting of the Pittville Gates by re-surfacing & planting around the gates to define this important gateway space. Renovate and add railings where necessary and consider traffic calming to enable easy pedestrian access between the town centre & Pittville Park.
Repair and restore exterior stonework to Pittville Pump Room.
Restore, renovate and enhance area adjacent to Lower Lake Weir.

ACCESS

Establish a distinctive yet simple range of materials, including paving, planting & furniture across Pittville Park. Provide a greater range of seating opportunities & increase interpretation with low level (child eye's height) boards at strategic locations.
Enhance gateway spaces by application of range of materials to emphasise the identity of the park.
Create a footpath network north of the lower lake to link gateways, destinations & improve access for park users.
Re-instate bridge across lower lake to re-establish historic route between Marle Hill & town centre. Design workshops with local children could inspire the bridge design.
Traffic calming measures for Evesham Road to reduce speed & create pedestrian priority crossing points to reduce the dominance of the car & improve east-west access through the park. Consider future use of the subway.
Locate a coffee kiosk close to the play area to the east of the park. Increase the opening hours for the Boat House & boating facilities.

PLAYFUL LIVING

The existing play areas are dated & provide low play value for users. Create new, larger play spaces in place of the existing provision & integrate amongst new & existing trees. Provide a range of equipment which provides high play value & a wide range of play opportunities. Remove fencing where appropriate to encourage play in the wider setting.
Create a new 'hang out' space for older children & teenagers which is physically challenging & will provide valuable space to meet friends in a relaxed, natural environment. This new space is inclusive for all ages, all genders, all abilities.
Re-locate skateboard park to ex-cricket hall for improved, undercover facilities including toilets & cafe in Leisure@Cheltenham. This new space will be designed in conjuction with local user groups.
Re-locate tennis courts and provide a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA).
Enhance aviaries by removing raised planting beds, re-surfacing and create a series of distinctive planted areas with low level interpretation panels which link to the play area to the south.

COMMUNITY

Re-establish the park setting by creating a series of colourful gardens along the southern boundary to the Agg Gardner recreation ground. Local community groups will be involved in the design, planting & on-going maintenance of these gardens to create a feeling of pride, ownership & stewardship in the park.
Install a medium height fence alongside Tommy Taylor's Lane & the lower lake footpath to act as a barrier to unauthorised vehicles which regularly drive into the park at this point. Install a pedestrian gate on the bridge over Wyman's Brook.
Create a distinctive & unique gateway adjacent to the St Paul's residential area. Design workshops with local community groups will inform the character of this gateway space & long term maintenance to be in conjunction with community gardens.
